In some vehicles, the camera or sensor housing (the “black box”) is positioned slightly off-center from the rearview mirror. To ensure the sunshade fits correctly, the cutout has to be made wide enough to clear both the camera/sensor and the rearview mirror on the opposite side.
If the cutout were made only to the exact size of the camera/sensor, the sunshade would interfere with the mirror during installation and removal. Since the boards in the sunshade are rigid, this could cause damage or require constant readjustment. Designing the cutout wider prevents this issue and makes installation much easier.
You may also notice small gaps on the sides of the sunshade. These are intentional and help with smooth installation and removal. Many vehicles also have features like assist handles, side curtain airbags, and trim on the “A” pillar that extend into the windshield area. The gaps allow clearance for these components while ensuring the sunshade can be installed and removed without forcing it.
How to Install the Shade Correctly
Open the sunshade fully.
Place the cutout around the rearview mirror and sensor housing.
Make sure the sunshade sits flat against the windshield.
Tuck the edges behind the “A” pillars or trim as needed for a snug fit.
Use the vehicle’s sun visors to hold the shade in place.
Tip: A small gap around the edges is normal and helps with quick, easy installation.
